Common: Shaggy Parasol
Latin: Macrolepiota rhacodes
Eating notes: May cause gastric upsets in some people. Otherwise, a good edible mushroom. Discard the tough stems in older specimens.
Cap: 5-20cm Pale cream with concentric rings of large, fibrous, slightly-darker scales. Initially ovate expanding to almost flat.
Gills: Free, white, crowded.
Stem: Off-white with a bulbous base and large double-edged ring. Often hollow .
Flesh: White quickly discolour pink or orange when cut.
Habitat: On the ground in all type wood woodland especially in confer woods amongst needle litter. Also found in compost heaps and composted shrubberies.
